Buy Nanking Bush Cherry plants for sale at Advanced Nursery Growers in DeFuniak Springs, Florida.

Nanking Bush Cherry is a dense, multi-stemmed deciduous shrub valued for its beautiful early-spring flowers and small edible red fruit. Pink buds open to masses of white to pale pink flowers before the leaves emerge, making this plant attractive as both an ornamental flowering shrub and an edible landscape plant.

The bright red cherries generally ripen in early to midsummer. Fruit is small, juicy, and sweet-tart and can be eaten fresh or used for jams, jellies, sauces, pies, and other preserves. Birds and pollinators are also attracted to the plant.

North Florida Growing Note: Nanking Bush Cherry is primarily a cold-climate fruiting shrub. It generally performs best in USDA Zones 3–7 and may struggle with the prolonged heat and humidity of North Florida. Gardeners in the Florida Panhandle should consider it experimental rather than a reliably productive fruit crop.

Plant Details:

  • Plant Type: Deciduous fruiting shrub or small tree
  • Botanical Name: Prunus tomentosa
  • Mature Size: Approximately 6–10 feet tall and 6–15 feet wide
  • Sun: Full sun for best flowering and fruit production; some light partial shade tolerated
  • USDA Zones: Generally 3–7
  • Bloom Time: Early spring
  • Harvest: Early to midsummer
  • Fruit: Small, bright red, sweet-tart cherries with a pit
  • Pollination: Not self-fertile. Plant two or more genetically different Nanking Cherry plants nearby for good cross-pollination and fruit production.
  • Soil/Water: Prefers moist but well-drained soil. Established plants have some drought tolerance but should not remain in wet or poorly drained soil.
  • Landscape Uses: Edible landscape, flowering shrub, hedge, wildlife garden, pollinator garden, screen, or specimen plant

Pollination Note: For reliable fruit production, plant at least two Nanking Bush Cherries. A single plant may flower heavily but produce little or no fruit.
